A week with Volcane Spins

A week with Volcane Spins

April 6, 2026 · Lena Hartmann

I didn't expect to write much about Volcane Spins. It's an arcade game about steering a little craft through rings of lava, and that description sounds like a hundred other games. But after a week it ended up being the title I kept opening without thinking.

The magic is in the timing. Each ring spins at its own speed, and you tap to shift your craft around it before a gap closes. Early on it feels generous, almost too easy, and then around the fourth or fifth area the rings start splitting and you suddenly have to plan two moves ahead. That gradual ramp is exactly right.

My only advice for new players is to stop looking at your own craft and start watching the ring ahead. Once I did that, my runs got twice as long. The game also rewards clean passes with a little speed boost, so greedy players who thread the smallest gaps genuinely do better.

Visually it's a treat on an OLED screen, all deep blacks and glowing orange. The music builds with your progress, and there's a moment where the bass kicks in that still makes me sit up. For a free arcade game it's remarkably polished.

If you want something short and sharp for a commute, Volcane Spins is an easy recommendation. Just don't blame me when 'one more run' turns into twenty minutes.
